This course is unique in the sense that potential candidates may approach the study of photography with no previous experience within the medium, subject to relevant entry requirements. It could provide a cross over from other artistic backgrounds and we encourage an individual approach and links to industry and professional practice.
We provide instruction, demonstration, guidance and personal tuition in the practical application of photography. The course incorporates commercially driven aspects of the photographic industry with an artistic and analytical approach. Included are technical seminars, workshops and demonstrations in practical application and theory. The core modules enable students to pursue specific pathways to suit their individual needs and aspirations.
The course consists of two years for full-time and three to four years for part-time. Year 1 deals with technical theory and practice as well as critical theory. Students are encouraged to develop individually, as appropriate to their ambitions. Year 2 takes a more self-directed focus, allowing the individual to develop an individual style and approach. Year 2 culminates in a self-initiated final exhibition and the production of an individual portfolio.
We strongly encourage and support links to employment and industry, and provide a module for students to engage in work placement or artist in residence.
The programme will provide a platform for entry into the photographic and media industry or to the continuation of Higher Education at an Honours Degree Level.
It may be possible for an applicant to complete the course whilst still in full-time employment as the course is flexible.
We encourage educational visits to professional studios, galleries and museums, both here and abroad. Annual trips abroad for specific practice are provided and students recently completed assignments in New York City.
Farnborough College of Technology has a strong and successful record within media and visual arts, and a tremendous success rate within photography. We have expert full time staff recruited from industry, and visiting lecturers with great professional standing.
