Apprenticeships - FAQs for Employers

Who are Apprenticeships for?
Young people mainly ages 16-24 who want to kick start their career or get a better job.  As an employer you will support them in developing and enhance their skills.

How do I recruit an Apprentice?
Training Enterprise can assist your recruitment needs by advertising your vacancy and screening applicants to meet your needs.  They will also assist in helping to identify any existing staff eligible to transfer onto the Apprenticeship Programme.

How does an Apprenticeship work?

Once you have recruited an Apprentice, as an employer you will be expected to provide a wide range of learning and training opportunities to help your Apprentice develop their knowledge and skills in the workplace.  In addition your Apprentice will need to attend college as required.  Most Apprentices spend four days each week in the workplace and attend College one day a week.

What qualifications will an Apprentice gain?

There are 3 elements to Apprenticeship qualifications.  These are made up of:

  • National Vocational Qualification (NVQ): This is designed around the skills people use at work
  • Technical Certificate: This is a vocational qualification, providing the knowledge and understanding relevant to the workplace and the NVQ requirements
  • Key Skills: These may include communication, application of number, information technology, personal skills and problem solving

How will the College support me when I recruit an Apprentice?

Training Enterprise will provide a Placement Advisor for every Apprenticeship.  Your Advisor will visit you in the workplace and support your Apprentices progress against an Individual Learning Plan.  Placement Advisors also work with employers on Health and Safety issues relating to the workplace.
