Apprenticeships - FAQs for Employers

Apprenticeship Employers BadgeWho are Apprenticeships for?
For people aged 16 and over and in full-time employment. As an employer you will support them in developing and enhancing their skills.

How do I recruit an apprentice?
We can assist your recruitment needs by advertising your vacancy and screening applicants to meet your needs. We can also assist in helping to identify any existing staff eligible to transfer onto the Apprenticeship programme.

How does an Apprenticeship work?

Once you have recruited an apprentice, as an employer you will be expected to provide a wide range of learning and training opportunities to help your apprentice develop their knowledge and skills in the workplace. In addition, your apprentice will need to attend College as required. Apprentices either undertake their Apprenticeship 100% in the workplace alongside their job or spend four days each week in the workplace and attend College one day a week (during term time).

What qualifications will an apprentice gain?

There are 3 elements to Apprenticeship qualifications. These are made up of:

  • National Vocational Qualification (NVQ): this is designed around the skills people use at work
  • Technical Certificate: this is a vocational qualification, providing the knowledge and understanding relevant to the workplace and the NVQ requirements
  • Key Skills: these may include communication, application of number, information technology, personal skills and problem solving

How will the College support me when I recruit an apprentice?

We will support you every step of the way. An Advisor will visit you in the workplace and support your apprentice's progress against an Individual Learning Plan. We also work with employers on health and safety issues relating to the workplace.
