Brush up your maths and English

30 October 2006

Employers and their staff can benefit from Farnborough College of Technology’s Essential Skills programme that helps people improve their maths and English.

Following its successful Ofsted Inspection and accreditation as an Action for Business College earlier this year, the College is looking to expand its provision and further strengthen relationships with local employers by recruiting learners for literacy (English) and numeracy (maths) courses.

The Government estimates that the poor English and maths skills of the UK workforce account for losses to the economy approaching £4.8bn.

The January 2006 Ofsted inspection praised the College for its wide range of part-time courses, highlighting:
• Good teaching
• High quality accommodation and learning resources
• Good development of learners’ confidence and skills
• High retention and achievement rates

Recent successes include Debbie who enrolled in March 2004, working towards her Level 2 (equivalent to 2 GCSES at A-C) literacy and numeracy qualifications. Debbie subsequently passed in July 2005. She credited the courses with giving her the confidence to improve her CV and secure better employment. She went on to gain further qualifications in book-keeping and learner support, and is now enrolled on a Level 3 accounting certificate course.

Ashley enrolled in August 2005, wishing to improve his skills to pass the Police Initial Recruitment Test. He made rapid progress, achieving Level 2 literacy and numeracy qualifications in June 2006. Ashley credited the course with giving him the knowledge and confidence to succeed in the Police entrance exams, and now works for Thames Valley Police.
