Recycling project boosts students’ skills

A group of students at Farnborough College of Technology are doing their bit for the environment while also learning valuable work skills.

The Focus on Life Skills students have set up a recycling project as part of an enterprise initiative during their two-year course, which, in turn, helps them develop their numeracy and literacy and boost confidence.

Course tutor Liz Wilson said: “The project gives them the opportunity to do real work skills which can be transferred into a supported workplace. Numeracy and literacy are embedded within the initiative as the students run the whole thing – ordering the number of recycling bins required, dealing with college staff, collecting the rubbish and ensuring it is bagged correctly. They really enjoy doing it.”

Seventy-five bins will be placed around the College site, supplied by Woodside Recycling in Reading, which has been very supportive of the students. They were recently invited to see what happens to their rubbish once it arrives at Woodside.

“The majority of students would like to go on and have some form of supported work, and the skills they learn with us help them to do this,” said Liz.
