Environmentally friendly students with learning difficulties at Farnborough College of Technology are on target to collect a record amount of recycled material this year.
Their aim is to beat the 27,000 kilograms of recycled paper and cardboard collected last year by more than 3000 kilograms.
Liz Wilson, course manager said: “The project was set up to give students the opportunity to experience real work within the college. Individual students have responsibility for different areas around the college and have to interact appropriately with customers.”
The college wide project has been expanding for the last year. The students handle the ordering, emptying and maintenance of recycling bins. They also manage and update a spreadsheet tracking the amount of paper recycled as well as visiting Woodside Recycling to see what happens to the paper they bring in.
Liz Wilson said the scheme is an excellent way of teaching literacy and numeracy in a practical setting that is relevant to the students.
