Aldershot Football Club Apprentices back in the classroom!

01 December 2008

Newly promoted Aldershot Football Club is continuing to invest in the future of its team with the help of Farnborough College of Technology.

With a good start to it's first season in League Two, the club has signed ten apprentices who are now studying the National Certificate In Sport combined with their football training.

The apprenticeship program is a partnership between The League Football Education  ( www.lfe.org ) body and the college as the local education provider, and assists clubs in balancing the educational needs of the apprentice alongside their sporting career.

Ian Hamilton, Sport Science lecturer at Farnborough College of Technology said, “We are delighted that we are in a position to help these talented players. They come into college twice a week and the remainder is spent with the football club. It gives them the opportunity to expand their education and mix with students in a friendly college environment.”

The National Certificate in Sport is equivalent to two A levels and covers subjects such as Psychology for Sport, Performance, Nutrition, Ethics and Values in Sport, Fitness testing and more.

Ian is particularly proud that central defender Dave Winfield is in the Aldershot Town first team squad as he studied at FCOT on the National Diploma in Sport Exercise Science.
