Apprenticeships are an excellent way of gaining qualifications and workplace experience. As an employee, you can earn as you learn and you gain practical skills from the workplace.
Farnborough College of Technology in collaboration with PremiAir aviation offer a scheme for youngsters to train as Aircraft maintenance engineers. Andy Fiswick is one of these Apprentices he was one of only 12 people at the time chosen for this project which has grown and grown. Andy enjoys a variety of learning techniques in his aim to become an engineer. Part of his study is at Farnborough College of Technology and also with Bristol College along with PremiAir. Andy said “day to day my job could consist of anything from pulling engines out for inspections to track and balancing of the main rotors” This exciting course also means Andy can work through his Civil Aviation Authority Licence modules which he enjoys.
Mandy France the College Apprenticeship Manager said “students like Andy are a credit to the scheme and clearly have a bright future ahead. The government in spite of economic tough times are really backing Apprenticeships and there are various schemes to engage employers with it. The latest scheme offering companies £2,500 if they take on an Apprentice is proving very popular. I really feel the Apprenticeship scheme gives young people a chance of a career and I hope the National Apprentice Week will engage employer in supporting our young people of Hampshire and Surrey”
There are a variety of Apprentices available in North East Hampshire and they are now proving a popular route for young people to take. Andy says “I would recommend a career in Aviation Maintenance to other teenagers as long as they are willing to put in the hard work and are committed”
