College and Council mark Black History Month with visit from Baroness Lawrence
Farnborough College of Technology and Rushmoor Borough Council had the honour of welcoming Baroness Doreen Lawrence OBE to speak to students and staff in recognition of Black History Month.
Baroness Lawrence had an engaging conversation in front of an inclusive audience of staff and students at the College’s Emerging Technologies Centre.
As a prominent figure in the fight for justice and equality, Baroness Lawrence shared her personal experiences with the criminal justice system and highlighted many of her transformative achievements. With heartfelt anecdotes about her son Stephen Lawrence, she painted a vivid portrait of Stephen’s character and ended the talk by emphasising the crucial role of young people in combatting discrimination and making positive change.
Students at the College showed great respect to Baroness Lawrence and had the opportunity to ask questions and talk with her after the event. The presence of council members and leaders from Rushmoor Borough Council added support to the visit, with guests also receiving a tour of the art and design department and some of the artwork created in recognition of Black History Month.
The visit ended with a culinary experience at the College’s Gallery Restaurant, where catering students skillfully prepared and served Nepalese-style cuisine.

“Baroness Lawrence has been a role model and source of inspiration for many years. It was an honour to meet her and welcome her to the College for Black History Month.
“We welcome opportunities for our students to meet remarkable people and I am sure that this visit will leave a positive and lasting impression on the young adults in attendance.”
Deputy Mayor Mara Makunura worked with the College to organise the event. She said:
“It was an absolute pleasure to help to arrange for Baroness Lawrence’s visit to Farnborough College of Technology to talk to the students about her journey on what is the 30th anniversary of her son Stephen’s death.
“Her messages of resilience and commitment to justice during this Black History Month are so powerful and resonant.
“It was inspiring to also hear her thoughts on education, on her role in the House of Lords, and in particular, her thoughts on supporting young people through the Stephen Lawrence Foundation, with its focus on classroom, community and careers.”
