There are lots of steps you can take to keep happy while at college and we are here to help. Here are our top T’s:

Take Care of Yourself
Exercising, eating well and getting plenty of rest can all have a positive impact on your mental health.

Talk About It
At college, you can speak to your tutor, a counsellor or any other member of staff about your concerns. You can also pick up a mental health signposting leaflet for external organisations who can help.

Take a Break
College can be challenging at times but staying organised and taking plenty of breaks while studying can help keep you on-track.

Tackle Stress
Spend time with friends, work on your hobby and do the things you enjoy. Taking time to relax will help you feel refreshed and motivated when you return to studying.

Staying Happy and Healthy at College

As a college, we support the NHS ‘5 Steps to Good Health and Wellbeing’. Following these steps can help you to boost your positivity:

Step 1 – Connect

Connect with the people around you; your family, friends, colleagues and neighbour’s. Building these connections will support and enrich you every day. Do not rely on technology or social media alone to build relationships. It’s easy to get into the habit of only ever texting, messaging or emailing people. At college, you can sign up to enrichment activities and clubs, where you can connect with like-minded people and learn new skills.

Step 2 – Be Active

Being active is not only great for your physical health and fitness; research also shows it can also improve your mental wellbeing by:

  • Raising your self esteem
  • Helping you to set goals or challenges and achieve them
  • Causing chemical changes in your brain which can help to positively change your mood

Ways you can stay active include going to the gym, taking a walk, cycling or playing games like football. Find an activity that you enjoy and make it a part of your life. As a student with us, you can access free swimming at Farnborough Leisure Centre during set days/times.

Step 3 – Keep Learning

Learning new skills can give you a sense of achievement and confidence. Why not sign up for that cooking course, start learning to play a musical instrument, or figure out how to fix your bike!

Step 4 – Give to Others

Even the smallest act can count; whether it is a smile, a thank you or a kind word. Larger acts, such as volunteering in your local community, can improve your mental wellbeing and help you build new social networks. Find out how you can volunteer at gov.uk.

Step 5 – Be Mindful

Be more aware of the present moment, including your thoughts and feelings, body and the world around you. Some people call this awareness “mindfulness“. It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges. You can watch this short mindful breathing exercise video on YouTube from Every Mind Matters.
