Overview

About the course

This course is ideal for School Leavers who want to pursue a career in the photographic industry. It is equivalent to three A Levels and provides a route into university or higher education.

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to photography, from studio and location to all aspects of post-production and industrial application. Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to participate in a range of educational visits to photographic exhibitions and contribute professionally designed project work within an end of programme college exhibition.

Who is this programme for?

The course is designed for 16- 18 year old students who are interested in pursuing a career in the photographic industry. The course provides students with support for commercial and art practices.

Costs

Students are expected to supply their own 35mm analogue camera, film and paper (dark room and digital). An equipment list will be provided at the start of each year. Studio equipment such as: lighting, DSLR, medium format film camera and printers are provided within class time. There is also a studio fee to contribute towards progressing costs.

Your course

How will I be taught?

All units are delivered by subject specific lecturers including practical demonstration sessions, lectures, group activities and individual development which will form the structure for each unit of work.

During this course, you will cover topics such as:

  • Studio photography
  • Location techniques
  • Digital imaging and post-production
  • Professional development
  • Art and commercial practices
  • Contextual studies
  • Experimental techniques
  • Presentation and display methods
  • Analogue photographic processes

How will I be assessed?

You are continually assessed through the set assignment briefs and unit task, all units can be achieved at a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade

What training will be provided?

You will be introduced to a range of specialist studio and location techniques, camera functions, post production, presentation methods, analogue dark room methods, contextual references, digital imaging and workflow, experimental techniques and Photoshop. Throughout the two years you will complete 18 modules in total including a professional portfolio and completion of a final major project in the second year.

What Next?

Successful completion of the course enables you to progress to the BA (Hons) in Photography at University Centre Farnborough or entry into the workplace.

Entry Requirements

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

From School

  • Five GCSEs at grades 9-4 (to include English, a creative subject, and preferably maths)
  • You will also need a portfolio of work to show your creative ability

From College

  • Relevant level 2 qualification at merit grade or higher (to include English, and preferably maths, at level 2 or higher)
