Overview

About the course

This course is ideal for School Leavers who have a passion for art and want to purse a creative career path. This course will allow you to progress to either a degree related to art, or directly into employment. You will be working on real-world projects, with previous clients including the NHS, Armed Forces and local businesses. Our aim is to provide you with a challenging programme of study to develop your existing artistic skills and unlock new ones.

Who is this programme for?

This programme is for students who have a passion for being creative and would like to work in the art industry. Students who perform best on this course are those who are willing to explore new techniques and have both commitment and enthusiasm for their work.

What will I study?

You will study a range of units and disciplines in the art field including painting, drawing, life drawing, printmaking, 3D and understanding how artist communicate ideas. You will be expected to take part in two weeks of work experience as well as many opportunities to produce work for live clients.

Costs

We ask students to buy a starter pack of basic equipment but you will need to top this up throughout the year. In year two, you will need to purchase films and photography paper. You will have to supply your own sketch books, canvases and frames for final work. There is also a studio fee to contribute towards resources.

Your course

How will I be taught?

You will be taught through a series of both practical and theoretical classes, where you will be encouraged to develop your own style and learn to be independent with your work. You will be given demonstrations of techniques within your classes and work will also be online for you to access resources.

What modules are covered?

On this course, you will study topics such as:

  • Visual recording
  • Observational drawing
  • Multi disciplinary work
  • 3D
  • Printmaking
  • Painting
  • Photography
  • Sculpture

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed via coursework and assignment based work which may include group presentations and critiques. Work will be assessed through formative and peer group assessment and a final mark will be awarded by the unit tutor. You will submit sketch books and final work is expected to be of a professional standard.

Entry Requirements

What is the entry process?

You will be asked to attend an interview with a portfolio of your current work to discuss as well as a reference from your school. You will need 5 GCSE grade C or above one in English Language and one in an art based subject. Students are also required to attend summer school (one day) and complete a summer project for entry onto the course.

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

From School

  • Five GCSEs at grades 9-4 (to include English, a creative subject, and preferably maths)
  • You will also need a portfolio of work to show your creative ability.

From College

  • Relevant level 2 qualification at merit grade or higher (to include English, preferably maths, at level 2 or higher)
