About the course

Farnborough College of Technology is blazing a trail for ambitious students through this prestigious new qualification. Designed with great input from employers, the content is up-to-date, relevant, engaging, and can lead straight into a career.

For those with an inquisitive mind and love of science, this T Level course will provide a fascinating look at science in an industry setting. You will spend 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% out on an industry placement. In your second year you can specialise in your area of interest before going to university or starting your career. This course is equivalent to three A Levels. 

Career focus

The specialist units within this T Level will give you a subject specialism, for careers in:

Food Sciences
For job roles such as a food science technician within a lab setting

Laboratory Sciences
For job roles such as a a laboratory techician or research science assistant for any number of areas within science

Metrology Sciences
Metrology is the scientific study of measurements. Job roles include metrology technician within industries such as healthcare, energy, communications, construction, and engineering

This T Level is designed for school leavers who have an ambition to work within the sciences, whether that’s laboratory, food or metrology. With both practical and theory elements taught on this course, students will need to have a keen interest in the subject and want to progress into the sector once leaving college.

Your course

How will I be taught?

T Levels place great emphasis on industry experience, so during this course you will spend 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% on a 45-day placement with an employer. This will give you the skills, knowledge and hands-on experience that companies are looking for when you step foot into the workplace.

Core units: 

  • Working in the health and science sector  
  • Scientific concepts  
  • Scientific methodology  
  • Experimental equipment and techniques  
  • Good scientific and clinical practice 

In addition to the core content, you’ll have the option to choose one of the following specialisms in technical science: 

  • laboratory sciences 
  • food sciences 
  • metrology sciences 

How will I be assessed?

On this course you will be assessed through exams, coursework, practical assessments and during your work placement through employer-led projects.

Entry Requirements

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

From School:

  • Five GCSEs at grades 9-4 (to include English and maths GCSEs at 9-4)

From College:

  • Relevant level 2 qualification at merit grade or higher (to include English and maths at level 2 or higher)
