About the course

Manufacturing Engineers primarily support the activities involved in bringing design programmes into manufacture. This role is pivotal to the launch planning and smooth delivery of exciting new products or product refresh programmes. The focus is on the advanced manufacturing techniques and project management skills required to launch products on time, on cost and to the right quality. Typically Manufacturing Engineers work closely with a range of other engineers, functions and managers both within their own company and supplier base.

What modules are covered?

What does the apprenticeship cover?

  • Our Engineering degree apprenticeships consists of a Level 5 HND and a Level 6 top-up degree.
  • The apprenticeship is made up of Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours.
  • Knowledge is taught within college, one day every week.
  • Skills are taught within the workplace. You will need to generate a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate the following skills:
    • Complying with statutory regulations and stringent organisational safety requirements
    • Producing components using hand fitting, fabrication and joining techniques
    • Producing Computer Aided Design (CAD) models (drawings) using a CAD system
    • Preparing and using lathes, milling and other general or specialist machines and high tech equipment
    • Preparing and proving Computer Numeric Control programmes
    • Using computer software packages to assist with and evaluate engineering activities
    • Producing and managing engineering project plans
    • Producing assemblies using a wide range of materials and techniques
  • You will be taught about expected behaviours for the industry and general employment.
  • Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths (if required).
  • End point assessment is the final stage of your apprenticeship and you must pass this to achieve your apprenticeship. It is the chance to show the skills, knowledge and behaviours you have gained throughout your apprenticeship.

What training will be provided?

The apprenticeship program is assessed in the workplace with weekly workshops with Farnborough College of Technology.

What Next?

Learners would need a HNC or Higher apprenticeship prior to enrolment of this course.

This standard has been designed to meet the professional standards of the Engineering Council for initial registration as an Engineering Technician (Eng Tech) in partnership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Further professional development and registration is subject to candidates successfully completing the appropriate learning, developing the appropriate competence, and undergoing professional review.

Entry Requirements

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

Learners must have GCSE grades ranging from Grade 4-9 or Grade A-C, including Maths and English or equivalent. All learners must have a prerequisite of a Level 4 HNC either through a full-cost course or an apprenticeship.
