About the course

Continue your studies in the dynamic field of business with our BA (Hons) in Business Management Top-up degree. This one-year course is suitable for students with a foundation degree or HND in a relevant subject who would like to gain a full honours degree. This course starts each September and is awarded by the University of Surrey.

Who is this programme for?

This course has been designed for students who want to turn their Foundation Degree or equivalent HE Level 5 in a relevant subject into a full honours degree. It is also suitable for those who have taken time out of education and are looking to return to their academic studies. 

It may also be possible for you to join this course following relevant professional qualifications and/or experience in the workplace. 

What will I study?

This top-up degree will cover topics such as project management, HRM, digital media and sustainability, where you will explore the need for sustainable development within business operations. You will also have the opportunity to  undertake independent research as part of your Dissertation based on a topic you are passionate about, further boosting your employability.

Your course

How will I be taught?

To prepare you for working in the business sector, modules will be taught in a variety of ways. This includes lecture-based presentations and workshops, alongside creating Individual and group project work. The programme is studied over one academic year and is full-time.  

What modules are covered?

Sustainability in Business

This module aims to provide students with an understanding of the need for sustainable development within business operations and explores the impact of global changes in organisational policy making. Students will be able to investigate the application of sustainable development in specific organisational contexts. It aims to equip students with knowledge of global sustainability trends and effective business responses.

Digital Media in Business

This module will enable students to recognise the impact of digital technologies on business. It aims to develop an understanding of digital channels and digital communication and their links to achieving business objectives. The module will enable students to gain practical skills and knowledge to work in the growing digital sector by allowing them to research digital marketing practices and use digital skills in a business context.

International Business

This module focuses on developing increased awareness of international business management in a global market place. The module will provide students with an understanding of theories and trends that shape the international business environment. It aims to explore the existing political, cultural and legal differences among countries leading to the analysis of the operational/entry strategies of international business corporations with special reference to emerging markets. 

Project Management

This module introduces students to the main concepts of project management including general project management principles, methodologies and the tools and techniques. This module will allow students to examine project management as a management tool and its use in industry. Students will be able to get an understanding of theory and practice of project management using PRINCE2 methodology as a framework of study.

International Human Resource Management

The module aims to provide a sound knowledge of policies, practice and issues in international human resource management. This module will help students to critically analyse the principles and practice which influence the development and implementation of International Human Resource Management including cross-cultural issues. The students will be encouraged to research the internationalisation of organisations and explore the subsequent implications for the management of HR.

Final Year Project

The Final year project is the most significant step in personal development that the student will undertake during the course. It demonstrates independent research, intellectual application and time management.  It gives the student an opportunity to study in an area of potential relevance to prospective employers and is considered by many to be the ultimate standard of an honours degree.

How will I be assessed?

A wide range of assessment methods are used in this programme, which have been chosen to suit the subject material being taught. The range of assessment methods you will experience will give you the confidence and capability to complete an Honours degree and progress further in your career. Your Tutor will be on hand to provide support during the assessment process and discuss any queries you may have. The range of assessment methods used in this programme includes:

What is the entry process?

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

  • Foundation Degree or equivalent HE Level 5 in a relevant subject.  Pass 50% average where classified. 
  • Students will be accepted onto Level 6 of the programme to undertake BA (Hons.) in Business Management (Top-up) subject to their holding an appropriate 240 credit HE Level 5 qualification at an appropriate grade.

Applications are considered on an individual basis, and we recommend that you apply even if you are not sure that you meet the criteria above.  

If English is not your first language, evidence of your ability will need to be supplied with our applications. IELTS 6.5 is required to be accepted onto this course.
