About the course

This course is ideal for School Leavers who want to pursue a career in the early years education and care sector. The course is a transition year so that you can prepare for one of our T Level qualifications.

College study combined with work placements. This programme prepares you to work, in a supervised capacity, with children between birth and seven years old and their families in a variety of settings and environments.

Costs

Additional costs will be incurred for a DBS check, polo shirt, course materials, visits and textbooks. Further details will be advised at interview.

  • Support physical care routines for children
  • An introduction to the role of the early years practitioner
  • Understand how to work in partnership
  • Understand legislation relating to the safeguarding, protection and welfare of children
  • Use legislation relating to the health and safety of children

  • Understand how to plan to meet the needs of the developing child

  • Support the needs of the child in preparing for school
  • Supporting children's development
  • Use observation, assessment and planning
  • Support children’s positive behaviour

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed through unit assignments, and work based assessment. Students also have to pass the Professional Development Profiles and Practice Evidence Records relating to their placement experience.

Work placement

An enhanced DBS check is required to attend a placement in real-work settings with children, from birth to 7 years. Minimum attendance required to complete the course.

What Next?

Successful completion of the course enables the you to progress to the T Level in Early Years, Education and Childcare, the Level 3 National Diploma in Children’s Play, Learning and Development (Early Years Educator) or a Level 3 Apprenticeship. Alternatively you may wish to apply for employment in the early years sector.

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

From School

  • Four GCSEs at grades 9-3
  • To include English or maths GCSEs at grades 9-3

From College

  • Relevant level 1 qualification
  • English and maths at level 1 or higher
