About this course

This apprenticeship program is aimed at staff working under the direction of a teacher, contribute to preparing the classroom for learning activities. Working with groups of, and individual pupils, who require extra support.

Typical roles include teaching assistant, classroom assistant, learning support assistant.

Studies include

How will I be taught?

This training programme is delivered through a weekly College Workshop (term time) and assessed in the workplace.

There are also additional off job workshops held at Farnborough College of Technology to support Functional skills & ERR (non term time)    

What modules are covered?

The Apprenticeship provides an opportunity to develop the skills & knowledge needed to support learners and includes the following four components:

1. Certificate in Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools (Level 2):

Mandatory Units:

  • Child & young person development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children & young people
  • Communication & professional relationships with children, young people and adult
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children & young people
  • Maintain and support relationships with children & young people
  • Support children & young people’s health & safety
  • Support children & young people’s positive behaviour
  • Support Learning activities
  • Help improve own and team practice in schools

2. Functional Skills: English Level 2 & Maths and ICT at Level 1

3. Employment Rights & Responsibilities Workbook

4. Personal Thinking & Learning Skills

What Next?

Successful completion of this level 2 apprenticeship could lead onto level 3 support teaching and learning in Schools.

Entry Requirements

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

The training programme is intended for new or existing support staff working under supervision in a school setting.

The entry criteria are staff aged 16 and over with 4 GCSEs A*- D or 9 - 3 to include Maths and English. GCSE’s will be considered along with the results of an initial assessment.
