About the course

This course is validated by the CPCAB (Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body). It provides training in the use of counselling skills at intermediate level.

This qualification is designed to give you the underpinning knowledge, skills and competencies to use counselling skills ethically and safely in a variety of contexts and roles.

Who is this programme for?

This qualification is intended for candidates who:

  • Are starting the first level of training as a professional counsellor
  • Want to learn counselling skills in other professional or helping roles
  • Want to improve their professional and personal relationships as part of personal development

What modules are covered?

This course is validated by the CPCAB (Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body). It provides training in the use of counselling skills at intermediate level and is divided into 7 units:

1.Use counselling skills ethically & safely
2.Establish and sustain a helping role
3.Work empathically as a helper
4.Focus on the helpee’s needs and concerns
5.Use self-awareness in the helping role
6.Use a range of counselling skills to facilitate the helping interaction
7.Use feedback and self-reflection to enhance counselling skills

How will I be assessed?

Trainees will be responsible for developing a portfolio as evidence of their learning achievements and a Candidate Learning Record.  Evidence will include: written assignments, class presentations, peer and tutor feedback, self-evaluation and review, case studies, witness testimony, audio tapes and external assessment, experiential group.

Other information

Students need to be aware that this level of training can cause personal and inter-relational stress and that during the course they might be encouraged by their tutor to seek counselling support.

What Next?

Successful candidates may progress onto CPCAB’s Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies (CST‑3)

This qualification could lead to employment or increase employability for those whose role is to support others in e.g. health and social care work, teaching and learning, advocacy and mediation, support and project work, other helping roles. It provides additional skills for those already in employment and is likely to lead to increased opportunities for promotion and advancement.

Entry Requirements

What is the entry process?

You will have completed the Level 2 Introduction course or similar*.

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

To enrol on this course, you will be expected to:

  • Be able to cope with course content
  • Have the ability to translate intra-personal experience into language and written work
  • Be able to benefit from self development
  • Be able to give and process feedback received in a constructive way
  • Be able to form successful working relationships with peers
  • Be motivated towards developing as a helper
  • Have emotional stability
  • Identify reasons for training beyond just personal development
  • Work with difference and diversity within the learning group
  • Have a reference from previous tutor

*This training must be from a recognised counselling training provider: recognised by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or UK Counsel for Psychotherapy (UKCP).  You will need to evidence that you have undertaken skills practice and personal development within this certification / qualification.
Exceptions:  We DO NOT accept certificates from on-line / distant learning suppliers.
