Overview

About the course

This course is ideal for School Leavers who want to pursue a career in graphic design. It is equivalent to three A Levels and provides a route into university or higher education.

This course is designed to develop your skills and give you an understanding of the wide range of opportunities offered by the commercial graphic design sector. You will develop your skills and understanding of commercial design work though a broad range of practical projects which will equip you with the knowledge to progress to in the design sector to university or in industry.

Who is this programme for?

The course is for any students with an interest and passion for any form of design such as: branding, advertising, print design, packaging, web design, promotion and more.

What will I study?

Throughout the course you will learn about the wide range of opportunities in graphic design and study both the technical and theoretical skills needed to work in the design industry.  

The first year focuses on developing your technical skills and understanding of design theory with the second year units becoming more specialised. The projects you will have are created to reflect the kind of work you would encounter in industry. There are also a range of client briefs undertaken throughout the course.

Costs

At the start of the course you will purchase a graphics equipment pack which will provide you with the bulk of the materials you will need, in addition to this you will need to purchase print credit and materials for mounting final work as needed. There is also a studio fee to cover central resources.   

Throughout the year there will be trips to galleries and exhibitions and you will need to contribute to the cost of these.

After successfully completing this course you also benefit from the chance to stay with us at University Centre Farnborough. This gives you a path to graduating with a degree or higher education course without the costs of moving away, all while studying in a familiar and supportive environment.

How will I be taught?

You  will be taught through a range of different methods including: workshops, traditional lessons, group projects as well as critique and review sessions.

What modules are covered?

The first year of the course is designed to develop your general graphic design understanding and software knowledge and topics will include:

  • Typography and layout
  • Visual Communication
  • Graphic design for print
  • Software Skills
  •  Drawing development

The second year is more specialised, and will allow you the scope to expand and develop your skills in areas such as:

  • Advertising Design
  • Infographics
  • Web Design
  • Preparation for industry
  • Branding
  • Clients

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed through practical assignments which cover a  variety of industry related projects and is delivered by specialist lecturers who seek to help students achieve their potential in a friendly supportive environment.

What Next?

Upon satisfactory completion of the course you could progress onto a degree such as the BA (Hons) Graphic Design taught here and at other universities, or start work in the Graphic Design industry.

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed through a range of practical assignments throughout each year which will all contribute to your overall grade.

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

From School

  • Five GCSEs at grades 9-4 (to include English, a creative subject, and preferably maths)
  • You will also need a portfolio of work to show your creative ability

From College

  • Relevant level 2 qualification at merit grade or higher
  • To include English, and preferably maths, at level 2 or higher
