Access All Areas for Former Students

Agnes

Our Access to Higher Education qualification has led to three of our former students returning to the college to teach.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma is designed to give those who missed out on a formal qualification at college a route into university.

Last year’s students’ enthusiasm for study has led them to degrees in subjects diverse as Midwifery, Law and Psychology at universities across the country – including University Centre Farnborough, University of Portsmouth, University of Reading, Royal Holloway, University of Southampton, University of Surrey and University of Winchester.

The three committed students studied the course among the same facilities as our University Centre Farnborough degree students at the college’s Boundary Road campus.

Terry Wilson, who returned to teach Chemistry at Farnborough, is also studying towards his PhD in Organic Materials Chemistry at the University of Surrey.

He said:

“The course was much more than a college course; it was a pathway that has changed my life so much.

“When I started the course I was working as a cleaner on military camps in the Aldershot garrison, and now all being well I will be a Doctor by the end of the year.

“The opportunity to share my experiences first hand with people who are in the same position I was in a few years ago was a huge factor in returning to the classroom.”

Other former students Agnes Wisniewska and Jane Puddicombe have returned to teach Sociology and Criminology, and English respectively.

Access tutor, Brian Rubin said:

“We always like to hear how well our former students are progressing at university, but to have some come back to teach with us is fantastic for everyone.

“Our current students can see how effective their course is at preparing them for university, while our former students get to give something back to the college.”

The Access to Higher Education Diploma is available on a full-time or part-time basis and continues to give motivated students the chance to discover their potential.

This May we will be  is hosting an Open Event for the Access to Higher Education Diploma for anyone with a spark of interest in university study – whether or not they’ve been to college before.
