Catering Students Named Joint Winners in HEAT Culinary Competition

For the second year in a row our incredible catering students have been named winners of the HEAT Culinary Colleges Competition, this year receiving joint first place with Highlands College.

The HEAT Culinary Colleges Competition is a chance for training chefs to demonstrate their determination and culinary skills. After months of planning, training and preparation, students traveled to Jersey this March to give the competition final their all.

The competition required teams to create a four-course meal which was tasted by competition judges; three top UK chefs. Points were awarded for both kitchen and front-of-house skills. This year students competed under the guidance of Connor Godfrey – Executive Chef at The Westbury in Mayfair, London.

The menu was:

  • Amuse – Pickled (Beetroot, Basil)
  • Starter – Taste of Hampshire (Trout from Chalkstream Farm, Gin from Bombay Sapphire, Lavendar and Watercress from Alton)
  • Main – Surf and turf (Pork belly, Scallops, Heritage Carrots, Mash and Jus)
  • Sweet – Crack pie (Classical with a Twist – Treacle Tart)

As well as taking part in the competition, students had the opportunity to explore the island – learning new skills from local butchers, baristas, restaurants, and a fish monger. Here is a snapshot of their experience:

Programme Manager for Catering, Gwen Grace, commented: “Our students produced a fantastic service and fully deserve their success. Many congratulations to them and a huge thanks to Connor for mentoring the team.”
