Former Student Wins International Award

Piotr’s award winning photograph.

One of our former photography students, Piotr Karpinski, has won a prestigious photographic award that will see his work showcased worldwide.

Piotr, 31, won the Graduate Single Image Award at the British Journal of Photography’s Breakthrough Awards.

Piotr, who lives in North London, studied A Level Photography at the college before going on to achieve a BA in Photography at Middlesex University in 2014.

He said: “My time at Farnborough College of Technology was a great experience. It was my first step in an academic photography environment and a time to develop my ‘photographic eye’ and knowledge.

“I love that there was emphasis put on old-school traditional analogue photography and I believe that anyone interested in the medium should start this particular way. It was a good time and place to discover and learn about what you feel passionate about.”

On receiving the award, Piotr added: “Receiving the Breakthrough Award from The British Journal of Photography gave me a huge shot of positive energy. It was one of my photographic dreams to have my photograph in the British Journal of Photography magazine. I feel so happy and privileged. I take what is happening now as an opportunity and as a big challenge at a same time.”

Lawrence Magee, Head of Media & Creative Arts, said: “We are absolutely delighted to hear of Piotr’s success in such an illustrious competition. It’s always wonderful to hear of our former students doing so well.

“The college has a strong tradition in Photography. We run several courses including a BA (Hons) Photography course and have regular guest lectures by eminent photographers. This year we have been visited by Roy Metha, Ken Grant and Luke Stephenson.”

As a winner of one of the four categories, Piotr’s work will be exhibited in East London this month and he will have his photographs published across the BJP’s online, print and social media channels.

The British Journal of Photography (BJP) opens the Breakthrough Awards to up and coming photographers worldwide. Entrants must be either currently studying on undergraduate and graduate courses, or be within five years of graduating.

Piotr won the award for his image ‘Woman in the Church No1’ from the series ‘Let’s Talk About Life & Death Darling’. Originally from Poland, Piotr settled in the UK in 2006.

Our students have won other prestigious Photography awards in recent years including Rachel Lowndes, who received the Judges’ Choice Award at the Association of Photographers Student Awards and Alice Luker who was Young Fashion Photographer of the Year.
