Game, Set and Match for Wimbledon Caterers

Level 3 Catering students Frazier Michie and Ollie Dillon have been offered a fantastic opportunity to work at Wimbledon, alongside Executive Head Chef Rob Kennedy.

Throughout the year, our catering students have had opportunities to work with Chef Kennedy, a former student of the College who has gone on to a successful career in the industry. Chef Kennedy mentored students during their recent win at the HEAT Culinary Colleges Competition. Frazier and Oliver’s skills and enthusiasm were recognised by Chef Kennedy, who offered them an opportunity to join him full-time at Wimbledon.

Speaking about the opportunity, Frazier told us: “We’re going to work at Wimbledon full-time, cooking in the member’s restaurant which will change to the Royal Box during the tennis championship. We don’t know what we’ll be cooking yet as the menu changes often so that it uses the freshest food. I’m excited to work with fresh food and it will be a good experience to work in a kitchen that produces formal fine dining.”

“Chef Kennedy liked the passion we had and saw a spark in us that some young chefs don’t have. He wanted to give us an opportunity to grow and do well. My advice to future students is to not give up. Any criticism you get in a kitchen is not bad criticism, it’s constructive and you should learn from it. Always make sure you ask questions if you’re not sure how to do something, that’s the best way to learn.”

Ollie told us: ” I am excited to learn lots of new skills and start a career that could lead to even more opportunities in the future, all thanks to Rob. Members of my family are chefs which is where my passion came from, and in the future I’d like to become a head chef.”
