Stealthy Success: Student Artwork Selected for Secret 7” Project

Farnborough College of Technology is celebrating a major win for one of its talented students.

Erica Reynolds, a Level 3 Art and Design student, had her design selected for the prestigious Secret 7″ project by War Child. The Secret 7″ features seven iconic tracks pressed onto limited-edition vinyl records. Each record boasts unique artwork designed by creatives worldwide, with the artist and song remaining a secret until purchase. Erica’s ethereal design graced one of these highly sought-after and collectible records!

Her artistic vision first came to life she listened to her chosen track and started imagining the meaning and story behind the lyrics. The first step was to sketch out the design as Erica wanted to give it a hand-drawn feel, but she also liked the depth and colour mix in Photoshop. Through applying skills she learnt on the course, she created her final design which was on display at London’s NOW Gallery prior to the bidding process.

Erica reflected on her experience, sharing: “When I started at Farnborough College of Technology, I never thought I would apply to a competition because receiving feedback was something that I found quite challenging. My course so far has not only taught me some of the techniques I used when designing the artwork but has also helped me to be more receptive to feedback, which meant I’ve become a better and much more confident artist.”

Farnborough College of Technology creates a vibrant environment where students on the art and design courses can hone their creative skills and push artistic boundaries. Erica’s success with Secret 7” exemplifies the College’s dedication to nurturing talent beyond test results and academic writing. Speaking on this, Erica said: “I don’t like written exams, I prefer practical assessments or assignments, and I really appreciate that the College values my work and creativity rather than just my spelling or grammar, or the ability to explain my creative process.”

Caroline Herdman-Grant, Programme Manager for Art and Design, expressed: “Erica’s selection for the War Child Secret 7″ project is a fantastic achievement and a true testament to her dedication and talent. It’s incredibly rewarding to see our students’ hard work and creativity recognised in such a competitive project. We pride ourselves on ensuring our students have the skills and confidence they need to thrive outside of academic environments, and Erica’s success is definitely an example of that.”

“This success exemplifies the exceptional results that can be achieved when passion meets the strong practical foundation provided by Farnborough College of Technology’s programmes. Congratulations, Erica!” added Principal CEO, Virginia Barrett.

Farnborough College of Technology empowers students to unlock their full potential with a focus on fostering artistic expression and industry connections, which in turn helps students turn their passion and ability into successful careers.

This year’s Secret 7” project raised an amazing £210,000 for War Child and will be used to support children affected by conflict.
