Student Paints Out of This World Mural

Level 3 Art and Design student, Lucy Hartley, was recently chosen to paint a bespoke mural at Princes Mead Shopping Centre, Farnborough – and it was an astronomical success!

Students on our art and design course were approached by Princes Mead, who tasked them with creating a space-themed design to bring new life to part of the centre. Many students submitted ideas for consideration, with second-year student Lucy’s ‘Alien Parade’ design selected for the final installation.

Lucy hand-painted the mural at the centre across three weeks, working diligently alongside college lessons and her part time job to bring the idea to life.

Liz Marsden, Marketing Manager at the centre, commented: “We’re thrilled with the design that Lucy has created, it’s fun and perfectly designed in theme with our ‘To the Stars and Back’ Christmas. We’ve had so many space projects in the news this year and Farnborough has such a rich aviation history, it’s great to be able to create something to celebrate that.”

Reflecting on the project, Lucy commented: “I was very honoured to have my design chosen and it’s been such an amazing opportunity. I loved creating and designing the aliens and overall it’s been a wonderful experience. This gave me a huge boost in my creative self-confidence and I can’t wait for what could be next!”

The mural is now complete at Princes Mead Shopping Centre for all to enjoy.
