14-16 Catering Competition

This term, our brand new 14-16 Catering Competition kicked off, challenging the chefs of tomorrow to demonstrate their culinary skills. Over 30 students from local secondary schools entered, with twelve students shortlisted for the final. This included students from Collingwood, Court Moor, Fernhill, Frogmore and Robert May’s secondary schools.

For the competition final, students were challenged to create a meal from scratch in our specialist training kitchens. The meals were judged by top chefs, including Stephen Scuffell from the Craft Guild Of Chefs, and Sam Straker and David Atkinson from Pennyhill Park Hotel. To add to the pressure, a live feed of the kitchen was shown to family and friends in the next room!

The competition was close, but Molly from Frogmore was crowned the champion, with Abby from Court Moor coming in a close second and Kieron from Fernhill taking home bronze. The three finalists were awarded embroidered chef jackets and a medal donated by the Craft Guild of Chefs. First place winner, Molly, was also given a trophy for display at her school.

Well done to everyone who took part and thank you to our judges and the organisations who donated prizes.

Teflon Diamond Standard Awards

Catering student Oscar was recently named a runner up in the Teflon Diamond Standard Awards for Aspiring Student Chefs! For the competition, Oscar had to create a dish based on a famous chef’s recipe but with his own twist.
Oscar chose to create a recipe by Rick Stein, who he met during Rick’s visit to the College last July. For placing as runner up, Oscar has won a three year scholarship at the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts.

HEAT Culinary Cooking Competition

Eight of our talented catering students will be travelling to Jersey this March to compete in the HEAT Culinary Cooking Competition final!

Students competed in the semi-finals earlier this year under the guidance of local celebrity chef, Rob Kennedy. For the finals, students Ben, Frazier, Ollie, and Xander will be preparing food for the judges, while Andrew, Gabriella, Oscar and Pashley will be demonstrating their front of house skills to diners. Good luck everyone!

Rotary International Young Chef Competition

Catering students Isabella and Cara took part in the Rotary International Young Chef Competition district semi-finals, where they were tasked with preparing a three course meal for judges. The meal had to show off their cooking and presentation skills and tested their ability to work under pressure. Both students were crowned winners, with Cara securing third place and Isabella taking first!

Zest Quest Asia

This February, students took part in the National cooking competition ‘Zest Quest Asia 2019’. Students Oliver, Frazier and Gabriella secured one of just six places in the final, with over 55 colleges and universities competing. The team of students worked exceptionally hard and were awarded the Koppert Cress Award for Best Use of Living Ingredient! As well as the award, students have also received a three night trip to Holland from Koppert Cress.
