14-16 School Programmes

During their final two years at secondary school, students can choose to study a college course with us as one of their options.

These courses are available through schools, and are not currently available to home-schooled students.

By taking one of their options at Farnborough College of Technology they will:

  • Discover what they enjoy before making an informed decision at 16
  • Extend themselves and develop employability skills
  • Explore exciting career pathways learn using state-of-the-art facilities
  • Enjoy a supportive and friendly environment

These courses run one afternoon per week and will help to prepare student’s for further education, and the workplace, while they continue to study towards their GCSEs. The varied curriculum we offer will allow students to choose from a range of different vocational subjects which will develop their practical and technical skills. Our tutors have industry experience, and are therefore able to lead by example, and pass on their skills to each and every student they teach. By focusing on personal motivation, wellbeing, teamwork and respect, we aim to cultivate an environment where students feel prepared not only for employment, but also for their post-16 education.

We hope that students will continue onto our full-time college courses once they have finished their 14-16 course – we have a range of Vocational Courses, A Levels and Apprenticeships for you to choose from.

ART & DESIGN

Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Art and Design

This broad course will allow students to develop a portfolio of work in a range of art and design areas. They will be taught the core principles of fine art, photography, graphic design, and textiles, all to extend their current knowledge-base in a practical environment.

PROGRESSION: this course will prepare students for our level 3 art and design course, or they could look for an apprenticeship in the creative arts industry.

Business, Administrative

Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Enterprise

This course is ideal for those who are interested in developing their communication, planning, and people skills. Students will engage in a wide range of business activities to develop skills relevant to working in the business world. This course will give students the opportunity to think about running their own business in the future

PROGRESSION: this course will prepare students for our level 2 or level 3 business courses or for an apprenticeship.

Catering and Hospitality

WJEC Level 1/2 Vocational Award in Hospitality and Catering (Specification A)

This course is perfect for those who want to explore the innerworkings of the hospitality industry and are keen to develop practical food and beverage skills. Students will learn to recognise the links between allergens, diets and well-being. By producing and serving food and beverages using our industry-standard equipment, students will be given the opportunity to develop their technical skills and industry know-how.

PROGRESSION: this course will prepare students for our catering and hospitality courses or for an apprenticeship.

Construction

City and Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Construction Skills

Students will gain an overview of the four main areas of construction: bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical installation. In a practical, hands-on working environment, they will learn the basics of each area, whether that is repairs and pipe work, installing cables, building structures, or making a variety of wood working joints.

PROGRESSION: this course will prepare students for our level 2 courses in one of the four main areas of construction, or an apprenticeship.

Engineering

City & Guilds Level 2 Technical Award in Engineering

Using industry-standard equipment in a real working environment, this course will allow students to gain a skill based understanding of the engineering world. They will be taught in practical workshops and classrooms, learn how to make components using a range of hand tools, investigate engineered products, and find creative ways of solving problems.

PROGRESSION: this course will prepare students for our level 2 or level 3 engineering, or aeronautical engineering courses.

HAIR AND BEAUTY

VRQ Level 1 Diploma in an Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector

For those interested in working in the hairdressing and beauty industry, this course will provide them with the skills needed to gain an understanding of the sector and the ability to progress onto another course. While using their own initiative, students will study a range of topics such as hair and beauty science, communication and creativity skills.

VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy (VRQ)

During this course, students will explore a range of topics, from marketing and promotions in the sector, to developing their critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. This course will teach the skills needed to gain an understanding of the sector and progress onto another course.

PROGRESSION: this course will prepare students for our level 1/2 hairdressing and beauty therapy courses.

HEALTH AND CARE

Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Health and Social Care

For those who have wondered what it would be like to work in the care sector, this course will provide extended knowledge and experiences of working in a variety of care related roles. Most of the work for this course is practical and skills based and will be taught through a range of different modules. Students will learn about how the body operates and understand how to improve an individual’s lifestyle and well-being

PROGRESSION: this course will prepare students for the level 3 health and social care course, employment in the care sector or an apprenticeship.


IT/COMPUTING

Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Information and Creative Technology

This course is a great opportunity for students to take their first steps towards a successful career in ICT. Students will be introduced to some of the key themes within the industry and will explore digital devices and technology. They will also develop a range of practical, technical and creative skills needed to succeed in the online world. On completion of the course, they will finish with a digital portfolio and experience in graphics and animation..

PROGRESSION: this course is ideal for preparing students for our level 3 courses in ICT or games development

MEDIA

Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Creative Media Production

This course is well-suited for those who have wondered how the media industry works, or how to obtain the skills to find a job in the sector. Students will learn about digital media sectors and audiences, plan and pitch a digital media product, and produce a short film and an audio product. To do this, they will be using two broadcast radio stations, professional video and filming equipment, and our industry-standard editing suites, all to take them one step closer to their career in media.

PROGRESSION: this course is ideal for preparing students for our level 3 course in creative media.

MOTOR VEHICLE

City and Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Vehicle Systems Maintenance

Turn a love of cars into a career with our motor vehicle programme. Students will use a number of modern tools and work on real cars in our industry-standard workshops. They will have the opportunity to build on their experience, knowledge and skillset, so that they are ready to progress to the next level.

PROGRESSION: this course will prepare students for a level 1 or 2 course in motor vehicle.

City & Guilds Level 2 Technical Award in Vehicle Technology

This course will teach students key skills in servicing and maintenance by working on cars. They will gain an understanding of mechanical engineering and combustion engines, develop knowledge in the planning of projects, and study a range of practical topics such as investigation, repair and replacement of tyres.

PROGRESSION: this course will prepare students for a level 1 or 2 course in motor vehicle.

MUSIC

NCFE Level 2 Technical Award in Music Technology

During this interactive course, students will be working in small groups to rehearse and perform contemporary music in a range of different performance spaces. They will also be working in our professional recording studio with the opportunity to record and mix the songs they will perform.

PROGRESSION: this course will prepare students for our level 3 music and music technology course.

PERFORMING ARTS

Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Performing ArtS

On this course, students will be preparing to create, learn, and perform in our theatre and studio. They will be taught by industry professionals who will introduce them to the wider world of performing arts.

SPORT AND FITNESS

NCFE Level 1/2 Technical Award in Health and Fitness

For those looking to gain a broad understanding of the fascinating world of health and fitness, this course is ideal. Topics covered include the principles of training, creating a health and fitness programme, and learning how physical activities affect the body. Lessons will take place with lecturers who teach college and degree courses and have lots of different backgrounds and information to share.

PROGRESSION: this course will put students in a great position for starting a level 2 or 3 course in sport with us.
