Overview
About the course
Aviation maintenance mechanics are found across the aviation sector. They can be found within both military and civilian organisations. They carry out inspections for maintenance on fixed wing and rotary aircraft (small aeroplanes to airliners, jet fighters and helicopters). Employers vary in size from small to large.
The broad purpose of the occupation is to perform inspections for maintenance on aeroplanes and helicopters. Aviation maintenance mechanics carry out pre and post flight inspection for maintenance. They prepare, and safety check the work area. They plan the activity and carry out airworthiness inspections for maintenance, such as replenishments. They assist with aircraft ground handling and complete documentation. They also ensure that the work area is restored on completion of the maintenance activity.
Aviation maintenance mechanics are required to work in a regulated engineering environment. Depending on the activity they may work inside or outdoors. This could include hangars, dispersals, gates, aprons, workshops, and on ships. It may also include areas away from airfields or airports. Work may involve maintenance on a variety of aircraft or aircraft components.

What will I study?
After a period of foundation skills and technical knowledge development within a protected environment/or under close supervision in the workplace or area, all apprentices will achieve the following qualification:
· Level 2 Diploma Aerospace and Aviation (Foundation Competence)

Your course
What modules are covered?
This apprenticeship will consist of core knowledge, skills and behaviours as well as specific knowledge, skills and behaviours.
Knowledge is taught within college for 1 years, followed by End point assesment preparation.
Skills are taught within the work place. You will need to generate a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate both core and specific skills. You will be allocated a work-based assessor to support you with this.

Completion of the Apprenticeship is designed to be recognised by relevant Professional Engineering Institutions at the appropriate level of professional registration (EngTech).
The progression opportunities could include a further apprenticeship :
- level 3 aricraft maintenance fitter
Entry Requirements
What previous qualifications and experience will I need?
Individual employers will set the recruitment and selection criteria for their Apprenticeships. In order to optimise success, candidates will ideally have 5 GCSEs at Grade C/4 or equivalent, including Mathematics, English and Physics.
