This recently redesigned regulated qualification has been brought up to date with industry / MCS requirements and is for learners that wish to demonstrate their knowledge in the Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pumps Systems (non-refrigerant circuits)

Who is this programme for?

This regulated qualification is for learners that wish to demonstrate their knowledge in the Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pumps Systems (Non-refrigerant Circuits).

What will I study?

By the end of the course candidates will:

  • Know the health and safety risks and safe systems of work associated with heat pump systems.
  • Know the requirements of regulations and standards relating to the installation, testing and commissioning of heat pump systems.
  • Know the purpose and operational characteristics of heat pump system components.
  • Know the different types of heat pump systems and the arrangements for hydraulic emitter circuits.
  • Know the principles of heat pump selection and system design.
  • Know the fundamental design principles for ground source ‘closed loop’ heat pump collector circuit design, component sizing and installation.
  • Know the layouts of ‘open loop’ water filled heat pump collector circuits.
  • Know the requirements to install, commission and hand over air source heat pump systems.
  • Know the preparatory work required for heat pump installations.
  • Know the requirements to install and test heat pump systems (non-refrigerant circuits).
  • Understand the requirements to commission heat pump system installations (non-refrigerant circuits).
  • Understand the requirements to handover heat pump system installations.
  • Be able to plan and prepare for the installation of heat pump systems.
  • Be able to install heat pump systems.
  • Be able to test and commission heat pump systems.
  • Be able to test and commission an air source heat pump installation (non-refrigerant circuits).
  • Be able to handover a ground source heat pump installation.
  • Know the requirements for the non-refrigerant circuit routine service and maintenance of heat pump system installations.
  • Know how to diagnose and rectify defects and malfunctions in heat pump systems.
  • Know how to rectify non-refrigerant circuit faults in heat pump system installations.
  • Be able to undertake inspection, service and maintenance of heat pump systems.
  • Be able to undertake the non-refrigerant circuit routine service and maintenance of a ground source heat pump system installation.
  • Be able to undertake non-refrigerant circuit fault diagnosis work on an air or ground source heat pump system installation.

Entry Requirements

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence

Entry requirements: 

  • NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in plumbing
  • Water regulations
  • Energy efficiency Part L

In addition, if not included in the above, current certification in relation to:

  • WRAS Water Regulations/Water Byelaws or equivalent
  • Energy Efficiency for Domestic Heating or equivalent

You will be required to show evidence of your qualifcations at enrolment.
