About the course
Develop practical bricklaying skills you can use around the home while building a strong foundation that could lead to future opportunities in the construction industry. This course offers accessible, hands‑on training designed specifically for adult learners. This introductory programme blends straightforward, real‑world bricklaying techniques with essential health and safety knowledge, enabling adults to gain confidence in undertaking small projects at home while also achieving the City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Health and Safety. Whether you want to repair a garden wall, build a small structure, or simply understand best practice on a construction site, the course provides clear, supportive guidance from experienced tutors.
What will I study?
Across six structured weeks, you will progress from understanding tools, safe working methods and setting out, to building corners, improving accuracy and applying a range of brick bonds. Each session focuses on developing practical skills that are easy to continue using beyond the workshop, while still reflecting the standards expected within professional construction environments.

All participants are required bring their own steel toe-capped footwear

How will I be taught?
The course will be delivered in our specialist bricklaying workshop.
What modules are covered?
Week 1 – Induction & Health and Safety
- Course induction and welcome
- Campus/workshop tour
- Introduction to course structure and learning units
- Basic Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction
- Construction regulations and legal responsibilities
- Role of the Health & Safety Executive (HSE)
- Safety signage and site communication
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Identifying common construction hazards
- Classroom-based health and safety activities
Week 2 – Tools, Setting Out & Basic Brickwork
- Health and Safety assessment
- Workshop induction
- Safe use and care of hand tools
- Correct manual handling techniques
- Setting out a basic work area
- Building a basic half-bond brick pyramid
- Introduction to jointing techniques
- Measuring gauge using a tape measure
- Checking level, plumb, and alignment using a spirit level
Week 3 – Corners & Accuracy
- Setting out and building a right-angle corner in half bond
- Checking work for square, level, and plumb
- Correct trowel techniques
- Avoiding smudging and keeping brick faces clean
- Improving speed and accuracy
Week 4 – Walling & Advanced Techniques
- Completing corner work
- Progressing to half-bond walling or blockwork
- Building multiple corners
- Introduction to profiles and string lines
- Keeping work level, straight, and true
- Further development of jointing skills
- Practising different joint finishes
Week 5 – Repairs & Brick Bonds
- Identifying common brickwork defects
- Removing and replacing damaged bricks
- Raking out and repointing brickwork
- Introduction to common brick bonds (e.g. stretcher bond, English bond, Flemish bond)
Week 6 – Small Projects & Practical Applications
- Building a small structure (BBQ or similar)
- Using different brick bonds in practice
- Constructing garden walls
- Building small brick piers
- Replacing sections of damp-proof course (DPC)
- Installing an air brick
