About the course
Gain practical carpentry skills you can confidently use at home, while developing industry‑recognised techniques that open the door to further training or construction pathways. This hands‑on programme is designed specifically for adult learners.
Who is this programme for?
This six‑week carpentry programme is ideal for adults looking to develop practical DIY skills for everyday home projects, repairs and improvements, while also gaining an understanding of professional carpentry standards. Combining workshop‑based learning with essential health and safety knowledge, the course provides a supportive and structured environment for beginners who want to build skills safely and correctly.
A key strength of this course is its project‑based approach. In the later weeks, learners select and complete a small carpentry project, applying their skills from planning and material selection through to cutting, assembly and finishing. This allows you to see a full project through from start to finish, building confidence and reinforcing learning in a meaningful, hands‑on way.
Designed to be accessible yet purposeful, this course stands out by balancing DIY practicality with industry awareness. Whether your goal is to tackle carpentry tasks around the home or to use this programme as a foundation for further construction training, you will leave with valuable skills, improved confidence and a clear understanding of safe, effective carpentry practice.
What will I study?
You will start with a strong grounding in health and safety, tools and manual handling before progressing into core carpentry and joinery techniques. From creating halving, housing and mortice‑and‑tenon joints to fitting doors, locks and ironmongery, the course focuses on skills that are both highly practical for the home and relevant within the construction industry. Careful attention is given to measuring, marking out and accuracy, ensuring your work is precise, clean and professional.
All participants are required bring their own steel toe-capped footwear

How will I be taught?
This course will be delivered in our industry standard carpentry workshop at our Aldershot Campus.
What modules are covered?
Week 1 – Induction & Health and Safety
- Course induction and welcome
- Campus/workshop tour
- Introduction to the course structure and learning units
- Basic Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction
- Construction regulations and legal responsibilities
- Role of the Health & Safety Executive (HSE)
- Safety signage and site communication
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Identifying common construction hazards
- Classroom-based health and safety activities
Week 2 – Tools & Basic Carpentry Skills
- Health and Safety assessment
- Workshop induction
- Safe use and care of hand tools
- Correct manual handling techniques
- Setting up a basic carpentry work area
- Introduction to basic carpentry and joinery skills
- Exploring and creating halving joints
- Exploring and creating housing joints
Week 3 – Joinery & Fixing Skills
- Introduction to basic joinery techniques
- Creating housing joints
- Introduction to mortice and tenon joints
- Measuring, marking out, and cutting accurately
- Safe use of workshop equipment
Week 4 – Doors, Ironmongery & Mitres
- Fitting locks and hinges
- Hanging an internal door
- Safe use of a chop saw
- Cutting mitre, bevel, and compound angles
- Repairing and replacing skirting boards
- Repairing and replacing dado rails
Week 5 – Project Planning & Build
- Selecting a small carpentry project (e.g. bird box, bird table, sawhorse, or similar)
- Interpreting drawings and measurements
- Material selection and cutting lists
- Beginning construction of the chosen project
Week 6 – Project Completion
- Completing the carpentry project
- Final assembly and fixing
- Finishing techniques (sanding, preparation)
