Overview

About the course

This course is for Adult Learners aged 19 or over who do not have an A* - C or 9 - 4 in GCSE Mathematics. The programme is examined at two tiers, foundation and higher, and, in some cases, students may be permitted to enter for a higher tier award if it is deemed to be a suitable route.

The AQA examination board has been specifically designed to suit students who are 19+. Whilst the course can be challenging and will require perseverance and dedication, we aim to make the study of mathematics at Farnborough College of Technology as relevant and applicable to the real world as possible.

Applications for this course are open between March and September. The application process is:

  1. Create an account on the website, choose the course and complete your details. Once applied you will receive an email confirming your application has been received
  2. You will receive an invitation within 2 weeks of application to an assessment and be asked to book a suitable date via Eventbrite (various dates and times will be available the assessments take around 60mins per subject)
  3. The outcome of the assessment will be discussed with you the day after the assessment and you will be able to see the course options available.
  4. We will then send you an email inviting you to enrol online, and you will have 2 weeks to complete this to confirm you place on the course. (failure to do this within the timeframe will result in your place being released to another student)
  5. Once the above is complete you will receive an email with your start date a time confirming your place on the course.

The course is free to all students who have not yet achieved at least a grade 4/C at GCSE level, otherwise the course costs are as follows:

This course covers number, algebra, geometry, measures, statistics and probability at foundation level only.

Assessment Pattern:

Paper 1: Written paper (Non-Calculator)

Paper 2: Written paper (Calculator)

Paper 3: Written paper (Calculator)

Resources Required

A suitable textbook will be suggested during the first lesson.

How will I be assessed?

The programme is assessed through three examinations; these will take place at the end of May and the first two weeks of June; two are calculator and one non-calculator. Regular homework assignments will be set and their completion will be an integral part of your success on the programme.

What Next?

Upon completion of this course, you may progress on to a variety of other programmes within the College or elsewhere; many learners complete GCSE Maths alongside other courses of study.

Entry Requirements

What is the entry process?

You will be required to meet the tutor. A short assessment will be carried out to determine your level of Maths on enrolment. For some students, an Adult Numeracy course may be a requirement before starting the GCSE course.

Please note, for those students who are not in receipt of fee remission, the examination entry fee is extra. It applies to all students over the age of 19 and is payable on enrolment. You may also need to buy course textbooks.
