About the course

This qualification will teach you the skills and underpinning knowledge needed in a broad range of contexts where information, advice or guidance is provided. It is ideal if you have responsibility for information, advice or guidance as part of you core work, or if you are involved in general signposting within the sector.

Who is this programme for?

The qualification is particularly suitable for those who:

  • Have already completed the NOCN Level 2 Certificate in Information, Advice or Guidance
  • Have completed another qualification at Level 2 in a relevant occupational sector
  • Deliver information, advice or guidance and who want recognition for the work that they do
  • Are Personal Advisors in the Welfare to Work sector who may need to develop their skills in providing personalised support, as identified in the report Now It’s Personal: Personal advisers and the new public service workforce2.

You will be required to complete two mandatory units, with the option to specialise with optional units.

The qualification provides the necessary skills for those wishing to work in the Advice and Guidance sector. This could lead to employment in the following areas:

  • Voluntary Sector Organisations including National Citizens Advice Bureau
  • Museums, Libraries and Archive Council and the local Library Service

  • General Advice Sector, for example Advice UK

Entry Requirements

What is the entry process?

The minimum age for access to the qualification is 19 years because the complex nature of advice giving within the range of sectors where it is offered demands that learners have a minimum level of experience, self-awareness and self-confidence.

No specific prior learning and/or qualifications are required for you to undertake the NOCN Level 3 Certificate in Information, Advice or Guidance. However, the demands and nature of the qualification and the assessment requirements are such that you will need to have literacy skills which are at least at Level 2 of the National Standards in Adult Literacy.
