The course is designed to provide candidates with sufficient skills and knowledge to enable them to work with participants safely and effectively.  The qualification allows registration with the CIMSPA.

How will I be taught?

The first 2 hours will provide theory input in the form of lecture and workshop tasks. The second two hours of each session will involve practical application. There will be some crossover between the sessions where applicable to the course requirements. Students will be expected to take part in individual, partner and group work. Full course notes will be provided and the College library is available to all students.

What modules are covered?

Candidates are required to complete four mandatory units and a pair of optional units.

Mandatory Units (completed by all candidates)
Candidates who choose to complete a course in more than one exercise discipline complete these units only once.

  • Unit 1 Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity: Assessed through written questions completed in the candidate’s own time.
  • Unit 2 Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment: Assessed through written questions completed in the candidate’s own time.
  • Unit 3 Principles of exercise, fitness and health: Assessed through a written test (1.5 hour short answer question paper).
  • Unit 4 Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health (Level 2): Assessed through a written test (1.5 hour short answer question paper).

Optional Units - candidates must complete a pair of units

Gym Instruction: Unit 5 and Unit 6 must be passed to gain the qualification

  • Unit 5 Planning gym based exercise is assessed through the completion of a written plan for a safe and effective gym session of 45 minutes to 1 hour in duration suitable for an adult beginner.
  • Unit 6 Instructing gym based exercise is assessed through instruction of the planned gym session which is observed by a qualified assessor. Candidates also completion of a self-evaluation and action plan based on the taught session.

Entry Requirements

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

Adults (over 18 years) who wish to enter a career in teaching exercise,or gain additional qualifications. Candidates of 16–17 years are not barred but they may experience difficulty in obtaining the insurance cover they require to work in this area. Attendance at exercise to music classes or using a gym (as appropriate) is required.
