About the course

The EAL Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Technologies is a Vocational Related Qualification (VRQ) designed to give you the knowledge and understanding of a broad range of engineering competencies.

Who is this programme for?

This qualification is predominantly for learners completing an intermediate level Apprenticeship or in full time education who are interested in engineering and would like to gain an intermediate level of knowledge and understanding about the engineering sector. The qualification may also be suitable for learners who are interested in engineering technology and/or are considering a career change. The qualification has been specifically designed to offer progression into a higher level of study or an Apprenticeship.

Your course

How will I be taught?

The qualifications cover the intermediate knowledge, understanding and skills that are required by someone working in the engineering industry. It takes a hands-on approach to intermediate engineering training by providing learners with:

  • Knowledge and understanding of a range of engineering competencies
  • Information that will help them make more informed decisions about their career options
  • Personal skills to help them work effectively and achieve their potential

What modules are covered?

The course consists of mandatory and optional units. These units will provide the appropriate guided learning hours. This course has two external on screen exams with the remaining units being subject to internal assessment and the students creating and completing a personal logbook/portfolio of course work evidence.

Mandatory units

  • Engineering environment awareness (external onscreen exam)
  • Engineering techniques (external onscreen exam)
  • Engineering principles (external onscreen exam)

Plus three units from some of the typical optional units below:

  • Electrical and Electronic principles
  • Electrical and Electronic testing methods
  • Fabrication and Welding principles
  • Turning and Milling techniques and technology
  • Producing components from sheet metal
  • Engineering materials processes
  • Understanding Engineering Drawing and Computer Aided Drawing (CAD)

How will I be assessed?

The three mandatory units are assessed by an external onscreen exam (shown above) and the remaining units are internally assessed using course work, multiple choice question papers and the learners producing a logbook/portfolio file that makes reference to evidence showing their achievements against the learning outcomes.

Equipment Needed

Course books and reading will be recommended during the induction process. Full uniform/PPE and safety glasses are mandatory. Successful applicants will be sent details of PPE requirements with joining instructions. The College will be able to assist with information regarding requirements.

Your future

What Next?

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to progress into employment or onto a Level 3 qualification having obtained suitable grades/entry criteria.

The course will equp you with a broad portfolio of qualifications that will enable progression to work and/or a modern apprenticeship, or to further full time education via a level 3 course i.e. Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering.

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

From School

  • Four GCSEs at grades 9-3
  • To include English and maths GCSEs at grades 9-3

From College

  • Relevant level 1 qualification
  • English and maths at level 1 or higher
