About the course

This course is ideal for School Leavers who want to pursue a career in the media industry.

The Level 1 BTEC Introductory Certificate in Digital Media is designed to offer a broad introduction to this area of work. It aims to develop the personal skills and attributes that learners need in order to achieve their full potential at this level.

It is also a chance for those who wish to make a fresh start on a course that offers a different learning and assessment style.

 

 

Who is this programme for?

We believe this qualification should be available for everyone who is capable of reaching the required standard. This will be assessed in an interview and will take into account all achievements and not just qualifications achieved at school.

Your course

How will I be taught?

You will be taught through lessons and practical workshops. Teaching of concepts and theories will be delivered in the classroom, but there will lots of practical lessons where you will be using various equipment like cameras and digital audio recorders in and out of the classroom.

You will also have the opportunity to use our broadcast radio studios.

What modules are covered?

  • Producing an Advert – In this unit will be asked to plan and produce TV adverts to promote different products.
  • Shooting a Short Film – You will earn about film making, how to shoot video, how to schedule and storyboard a production before going on to make you own short film.
  • Making an Audio Recording – In this module you will learn lots of practical skills involving recording and editing audio. You will practice by recording and producing a radio drama, conducting interviews, recording in different locations before going on to record and edit a radio advertisement.
  • Developing a Personal Progression Plan – This unit will help you think about your next steps. Will you progress in education, look at apprenticeships or consider employment? You will learn about skills and behaviours and set personal targets in the form of a progression plan.

All young people will continue to improve their skills in English and Mathematics while studying at the college. If you have lower than a 3 grade GCSE in Mathematics or English Language, you will be supported to work towards this level.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through coursework and projects. There are no exams within the media course. For each unit you study you will be given an assignment and you will work on producing what is requested which is marked by your tutors.

Successful completion of the course along with good attendance, a positive attitude and appropriate behaviour across the year will enable you to progress to a Level 2 qualification.

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

From School:

  • GCSEs at grades 9-2 (including English and maths or equivalent qualifications)

From College:

  • Entry level 3 qualification in English and maths
