About the course

Kick-start your career in vehicle maintenance with our entry level programme. While training, you will use a number of modern tools and work on real cars in our industry-standard workshops. You will build on your experience, knowledge, and skill-set, ready to progress onto the next level.

  • Careers related to motor vehicle include mechanical engineer, garage manager, vehicle electrician, motor mechanic and more
  • Our purpose built workshops include a full size garage
  • On completion of this course, you could progress to the level 2 programme in vehicle maintenance and repair, look for employment, or start an apprenticeship

  • Routine vehicle maintenance processes and procedures on vehicles
  • Vehicle wheels and tyres construction and maintenance
  • Vehicle driveline maintenance
  • Introduction to spark ignition fuel systems
  • Introduction to compression ignition fuel systems
  • Spark ignition system maintenance

How will I be assessed?

The scheme offers a user-friendly method of continuous assessment which includes many visual questioning techniques to stimulate and interest learners.

All candidates must compile a portfolio of evidence from practical workshop tasks, and pass online tests that show achievement of all the relevant learning outcomes and knowledge requirements.

Functional Skills

Functional skills are practical skills in English, information and communication technology (ICT) and mathematics that allow individuals to work confidently, effectively and independently in life. The programme manager for your course will discuss the most appropriate Functional Skill for you.

What Next?

Successful students will complete the year with a broad basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and the various roles within the retail motor industry. They will be able to progress to appropriate level two courses.

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

From School

  • Four GCSEs at grades 9-2 (to include English Language and maths)

From College

  • Functional skills level 1 qualification in English and maths
