What to Expect at College

Starting college is a big step and it’s normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves. This blog will give you a handy overview of what to expect, but for more info keep an eye out for our future blogs on pre-college worries, the difference between school and college, preparing for your interview and student support.

School vs College

College feels different from school in some important ways, but that’s not a bad thing.

You’ll usually have:

  • More independence over your timetable and study time
  • Fewer but longer lessons, focused on specific subjects
  • More responsibility for managing coursework and deadlines

You’re treated more like an adult at college, which means you’re trusted to manage your time and workload, but you’re absolutely able to get help when you need it.

Your First Weeks (aka Finding Your Feet)

The first few weeks at college are all about settling in. You won’t be expected to know everything (or everyone!) straight away.

We hold an event over the summer holidays called “Summer College” which will help you get a little familiar with the campus and meet your lecturers before you start with us in September. Of course, over your first few lessons, you can expect:

  • Help with finding classrooms, workshops and facilities
  • Time to get used to your timetable and course structure
  • Meetings with tutors who’ll explain how your course works

Feeling unsure at first is completely normal. Most students are in the same position, even if they don’t show it.

What Lessons Are Like

College learning is designed to prepare you for your next steps whether that’s work, higher education or an apprenticeship.

Depending on your course, classes might include:

  • Theory-based lessons
  • Practical, hands-on sessions or workshops
  • Independent study and coursework
  • Integrated work placements

You’ll be encouraged to ask questions, share ideas and take ownership of your learning. At college, you really get what you put into it, so don’t be embarrassed to participate and ask questions!

Your Lecturers and Support Team

Your lecturers are there to help you succeed, not to catch you out. They want to see you progress and will help you if you’re struggling.

We also offer support such as:

Asking for help early is always encouraged and it won’t reflect badly on you. We’re here to listen, help you and get you to where you want to be.

Making Friends and Settling In Socially

One of the best things about college is meeting new people. You’ll be studying alongside students from different schools, backgrounds and experiences.

Some people settle in very quickly, others take a little longer to adjust and both are absolutely fine.

It’s not unusual to worry about making friends – in fact, we find it’s one of the most common concerns before starting college – but making friends is quite natural! You’ll soon find your people through:

  • Classes and group work
  • Breaks and trips
  • Enrichment activities and clubs

You don’t need to rush or change yourself to fit in, these things tend to happen naturally over time and you may find that some of the friendships you make at college last a lifetime.

A Typical Day at College

No two days look exactly the same, but your day might include:

  • Lessons spread across the morning and afternoon
  • Free periods for study, assignments or relaxing
  • Time with friends between sessions
  • Time to go off site for lunch

Learning how to balance study with downtime is part of the college experience and something you’ll get better at as the term goes on – it’s great to master this skill now as it will be a real help in the future.

College Life Beyond the Classroom

College isn’t just about lessons, we also prioritise individual development and confidence outside of the classroom. We do this in a number of ways, but this includes:

  • A variety of enrichment activities, like gym or art club
  • Talks from guest speakers on important topics, like student finance
  • Work experience
  • Finishing School, which is a chance for students to attend workshops that prepare them for life beyond college, like budgeting

Feeling Nervous? That’s Normal

If you’re feeling nervous about starting college, you’re not alone. Almost everyone feels that way at first, even if it’s not obvious!

It’s okay to:

  • Ask questions
  • Take things one step at a time
  • Give yourself time to adjust

Confidence builds with experience and don’t forget that support is always available if you begin to feel unsure or overwhelmed at any point.
