Hats off to University Centre Graduates
University Centre Farnborough’s class of 2022 has been celebrating their achievements with a prestigious graduation ceremony at Guildford Cathedral.
Over 150 graduates filed into the cathedral joined by their friends, family, and lecturers, with the sound of trumpets ringing out to mark the beginning of the ceremony.
The formal event was presided over by Principal CEO Virginia Barrett, Chair of the Corporation Martin Earwicker, and Presiding Officer from the University of Surrey Pro Chancellor Dr Jim Glover. Vice Principal Lawrence Magee served as the orator for the conferment of awards.
Addressing the successful students, Principal CEO Virginia Barrett said;
“Coupled with the immense pride you will have with your qualifications, many of you started your studies in 2020, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. So well done. Not only for attaining your HE qualifications but for doing so during one of the most challenging periods of our history. It makes your achievement all the more special.
“I welcome you, to the lifelong communities of the University of Surrey and the University Centre Farnborough. As alma mater of these empowering institutions, continue surrounding yourselves with people who support and challenge you to make your lives and the world around you, a better place for all.”
Following the ceremony in Guildford, the newly-awarded graduates returned to University Centre Farnborough for a lavish reception filled with fizz, sandwiches, and cake.
Graduates were pleased to share their experiences of studying and their plans for the future:
Lance McCarthy, graduating with a degree in business, returned to study as a mature student. He said;
“It’s been quite a journey and I learnt I can actually do this because, to begin with, I wasn’t too sure of my abilities. Now I am studying teacher training, which started in September, so I am on a long road to continued academia.”
Michael Hope, graduating with a qualification in counselling, said;
“The course team was brilliant, we still keep in touch and I am now working as a practitioner in counselling and psychotherapy to help people.”
Chantelle Boxter graduated with a degree in psychology with sociology. She described her time as;
“Rewarding but challenging, I learnt to look at the world from a totally different perspective and that it’s never too late to make new friends and all the knowledge we have gained has been really enjoyable. I am now currently studying for my Masters in occupational psychology.”
Three special awards to mark students’ outstanding achievements were also given, in the categories of teamwork, academic endeavour, and professionalism.
Media graduate Lucas Mitchell took home the award for academic endeavour. Lucas started college at Farnborough on a level 2 course, working his way up to level 6 (degree level). He did so while working diligently and dedicating himself to overcoming various challenges, such as volunteering as a student ambassador at Open Events.
Education graduate Izzy Soane was successful in the teamwork category due to her dedication and commitment as Higher Education Mentor to other students. She attended various events to support new students, and with her positivity and growth mindset, she was able to welcome fellow students in the spirit with which the College hopes all new teachers aspire to.
Graphic design graduate Ella Mansell won the award for professionalism, thanks to her success working as a freelance designer alongside her degree, organising the graphic design end-of-year showcase, and gaining employment straight after completing her qualification.
