The New Robotic Resident in our Emerging Technologies Centre

We’re connecting students with some of the latest technology in our Emerging Technologies Centre, including state-of-the-art robotics.

Our latest investment is Cruzr – an intelligent humanoid service robot capable of complex actions and interactions with humans.

Cruzr will be used in multiple subject areas, helping students to learn about software coding and the use of robotic technologies in various industries.

Programme Manager for Computing, Michelle Chapman, commented: “Currently, Cruzr is working with our T Level students and Level 3 IT and Game Design students. It is helping students to develop their skills in logic, programming and computational thinking. Cruzr comes fully equipped with navigation and obstacle avoidance, electric sensor protection, U-meeting video call system and facial recognition. It can also play music and dance! We all look forward to Cruzr interacting with other faculty areas in the very near future.”

Students from our Digital (IT) T Level course helped to unbox Cruzr for the first time in our Emerging Technologies Centre. They will be just one of the groups whose learning will be enhanced by this new technology.

Lecturer in IT and Computing, Christian Hayward, commented: “We are delighted to have this piece of state-of-the-art technology. Part of what is really exciting about Cruzr is its ability to enable students to experiment and practically implement SLAM (Simultaneous Location and Mapping) algorithms. This is especially relevant for our T Level students as they will be working with SLAM algorithms in their future jobs and using these emerging technologies.”
