Our students complete a two-week work experience placement as part of their programme to help them make informed decisions about their future career path. These placements take place in real working environments and help to give students an insight into the working world. Here are just a few examples of where our students have worked this year!
Art student Lucy completed her work experience at Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, where she helped with videography for an ice cream campaign, designed doughnut packaging using Photoshop and Illustrator, and created social media posts. She commented: “The main thing I can take away from this experience is confidence – confidence to trust myself that I will be able to think of ideas and that I can do it.” Here’s Lucy’s video documentary of her experience:
Students across the College have worked with OverWorld Studios, a recently opened gaming studio in Farnborough. They’ve been involved with a number of projects, helping to promote the new studio and run games tournaments.
We say goodbye to another set of work experience students this week from @fcot! We’ve had over 60 students in the past 5 weeks from photographers to graphic designers, coders to editors.

Here’s one of the promotional videos students created for the studio:
Plumbing student Nathan completed his placement with UK Plumbing Contractors of Aldershot. Speaking about his experience, he told us: “On my work experience I did visual learning and practical installations. On my first day I laid hot and cold water pipes and installed the flow and returns valves for radiators in a loft conversion. I really enjoyed my work experience and I am now working for the company on my day off. It has been very helpful as I am learning different skills. I would like to do an apprenticeship with them next year.”
Our level 2 IT students completed work placements in organisations such as Microsoft, Virgin Trains, and Project Five, getting involved in tasks like technical support and computer maintenance.
IT student Alexi completed his placement at Wokingham Borough Council, working with engineers to get hands-on experience and attending meetings to see how IT teams are helping council operations. IT student Sam worked at Blucando, a local IT support company. Sam’s employers were impressed with his work during the placement and offered him a part-time job as a result!
Lecturer in IT Neil commented: “All students talked positively of their experiences and many have been able to apply what they have learned in class. One employer even mentioned than a student helped her recover a missing file after her computer crashed.”
Motor Vehicle student Adam was the first student to complete a work placement with Mercedes Benz specialists Tim Purslow Ltd.
Adam worked alongside technicians to complete servicing tasks, vehicle inspections, brake overhauls and replacements and suspension repairs. He was also briefed on the importance of customer service, communication and value for money.
Adam commented: “My time at Tim Purslow provided me with a much better understanding of modern vehicles, giving me more confidence as a learning technician. The experience of helping carry out routine vehicle servicing and diagnosing why cars would not start, was invaluable in helping to further my career. Working amongst such a talented and passionate team has helped me appreciate the academic side of what I am being taught at college. The experience and treatment that I have had whilst on placement was fantastic and I would recommend the placement for other aspiring technicians.”
In February, we were delighted to welcome our first work experience student Adam Ikar from @fcot 🔧 Adam was an absolute pleasure to have on site and we wish him all the best in his Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Diploma! 👏🏽 #careers #carservicing #apprenticeships pic.twitter.com/4ue3lTWA95
