About the course

The programme will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to launch your career in the bricklaying industry. The topics you will learn on this course will give you the confidence to start working on more complicated tasks or in the real workplace as an apprentice.

Who is this programme for?

This course is for school leavers who would like to gain experience and understanding of the construction industry. Upon completion candidates will be awarded the City & Guilds Diploma in Construction Skills (Bricklaying).

Costs

Students must purchase protective workwear and safety footwear in order to comply with health & safety requirements. Financial assistance may be available to help with the cost. Please refer to the "Finances, Fees and Support" section of this website for further information.

Your course

How will I be taught?

During this bricklaying course, you will be taught using a mixture of theory and practical lessons. All practical lessons will take place in our purpose-built workshops under the instruction of staff with extensive industry experience.

What modules are covered?

The qualification comprises of the following units:

  • Introduction to the construction industry
  • Introduction to health & safety in construction
  • Mixing and using concrete
  • Constructing half brick walling
  • Constructing block walling
  • Constructing half brick return corners
  • Constructing cavity walls in brickwork and blockwork
  • Laying block paving
  • Laying underground domestic drainage
  • Preparing background surfaces and applying render coats
  • Work experience (two weeks)

 

How will I be assessed?

  • Theory exams
  • Practical assessments

What Next?

You can progress to the Level 2 C&G Diploma in Bricklaying, an intermediate apprenticeship or employment.

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

From School

  • Four GCSEs at grades 2 and above (including English or maths)

From College

  • Entry level 3 qualification in English and maths
