My Farnborough Story

At Farnborough we got to experience so many elements on the course. This included fashion, textiles and garment making, as well as topics like art history, fashion photography and life drawing. This really helped for my portfolio for university. I got to do work experience at a costume wardrobe, which was very relevant to the career I want to work towards and set me up well for my university interview.

Studying fashion at Farnborough has allowed me to be really experimental with my work and push my ideas as far as I can. It has allowed me to develop what I will then later use in my portfolio and to develop my own style of work. I think my best achievement would be that I’ve been creating work which has been up to a distinction grade which I’ve been really proud of and is something I didn’t think I could do from school.

As the course focuses on fashion and textiles, it means it is a more direct route whereas if you were doing A Levels you would have to spread yourself more thinly. During the course we got to help out backstage at Top Model. It was a great chance to see the garments close-up and we also had the opportunity to show our own garments at the show.

Overview

About the course

This course is ideal for School Leavers who want to pursue a career in fashion and design. It is equivalent to three A Levels and provides a route into university or higher education.

You will develop your understanding of fashion and textile design and gain the skills needed to stand out in the competitive fashion industry. You will have opportunities to work at high profile events, such as London Fashion Week and Top Model. Previous trips have included the Fashion and Textile Museum, Graduate Fashion Week and visits to guest lectures.

Who is this programme for?

The course is design for 16- 18 year old students who are interested in pursuing a career in a fashion and/or textiles related field.

What will I study?

During the first year you will explore garment construction and patterncutting techniques, fashion photography, computer aided design, art and fashion history and textile techniques. All students participate in an End of year Fashion Show.

In the second year we will focus on teaching you more garment construction techniques along with introducing you to a wider range of textile and fashion illustration techniques. Support will also be given in applying to university level courses and the creation of individual portfolios where you will be able to focus your studies into areas of fashion and textiles that interest you. Your second year ends with an Final Major Project and an End of Year Fashion Show.

Costs

Students are expected to supply their own art and textile/ fashion materials for assignment work, an equipment list will be provided at the start of each year. In addition students will need to have access to a sewing machine and dress dummy at home.

How will I be assessed?

You are continually assessed through the set assignment briefs and unit task , all units can be achieved at a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade.

What training will be provided?

You will be introduced to a variety of drawing and textile/ fashion illustration techniques, how to use a sewing machine, make your own patterns for constructing your garment designs, various garment construction techniques and processes, how to use a camera and style photo shoots and how to design magazine layouts using Computer Aided Design packages such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

What Next?

You could progress to a degree in a related subject such as fashion design, costume or textile design, fashion styling and promotion, illustration and interior design. You could also apply for jobs at a junior or apprentice level.

Entry Requirements

What is the entry process?

All interested students should apply online through the college website, you will then be invited to attend an online interview with the Fashion and Textiles Course Tutor. Prior to your interview, you will need to submit a portfolio of art, craft and/or design work and any work that you undertake in your own time, be prepared to discuss it with the course tutor.

What previous qualifications and experience will I need?

From School

Five GCSEs at grades 9-4 (to include English, a creative subject, and preferably maths)
You will also need a portfolio of work to show your creative ability

From College

Relevant level 2 qualification at merit grade or higher (to include English, and preferably maths, at level 2 or higher)
