New Part-time Sports Massage Courses Launched

The Sport Science department at Farnborough College of Technology has launched two new courses to support those training for a career in Sports Massage.

Sports Massage Therapy (VTCT Level 3 Diploma)

Thursdays evenings, £975 + £94 student registration

This is a technical level qualification aimed at developing the knowledge, understanding and technical skills needed for a career as a Sports Massage Therapist, either employed or self-employed.

Studies include:

  • Anatomy and physiology for sports massage
  • Principles of health and fitness
  • Understand the principles of soft tissue dysfunction
  • Professional practice in sports massage
  • Sports massage treatments

Students who complete this qualification will be able to gain employment and insurance to work as a sports massage therapist. 


Sports Massage Therapy (VTCT Level 4 Certificate)

Thursdays evenings, £811 + £69 student registration

This qualifications is different from the VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy since it qualifies you to work with injured clients. The Level 3 qualification is more concerned with pre and post event massage on ‘non-injured’ tissue.

 This is a vocational qualification that will prepare you for a career as a sports massage practitioner working with injured clients. This qualification is designed for those aged 16 years or over – including adults – and covers all the skills and knowledge required for this role. To start this course you will need to have a Level 3 qualification in sports massage therapy or equivalent.

You will develop the skills to conduct subjective and objective assessments, which will cover active, passive and resisted range of movements, detailed postural analysis, functional testing and special tests. You will also develop the skills to work safely and effectively on muscle and para-tendon injuries using a variety of soft tissue techniques and will be able to advise on treatment modalities to support soft tissue repair.

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a sports massage practitioner working with injured clients. When you complete this qualification, you will be able to gain insurance to work as a sports massage practitioner. Employment opportunities exist in a variety of settings, including:

  • Private health clubs and leisure centres
  • Sports centres and clubs
  • Working independently/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
